Scott Powers, president and owner of Magic Touch Brick Pavers Inc., believes ingenuity is the key to his success.
" We try to do creative projects," said Powers, who in 1985 founded his company in Manchester, MI. Magic Touch focuses mainly on brick paver and retaining wall projects. "I like doing something that no one else has thought of or come up with," he said.
Powers, who also worked in farming and excavations, found that his imagination helped him decide to focus solely on landscaping.
"The pavers were just starting to come alive." said Powers of his early years in the business, "We started working with pavers, and once we started getting creative with them, it wasn't but a year or two until we quit doing everything else. We started coming up with new and creative stuff. That was early on and there wasn't a lot out there yet. The more imaginative we got, people just started calling. It grew from there."
One unique project, a labyrinth of brick pavers built at St. Joseph's Hospital, serves as a form of therapy to patients who walk through the maze. In another project, Magic Touch created a map of old Detroit at the Detroit Historical Museum, utilizing pavers. Magic Touch also used pavers to build the logo of the Lakes of Taylor Golf Course into a patio near the club house. You'll also find their brick paving work in the entranceways to Michigan Stadium.
Magic Touch works on residential projects, as well as commercial. "We've done small projects and we've done huge projects," said Powers. "You won't find any big ads for us in the newspaper. We work mainly by word of mouth. I don't want to have 100 crews laying straight sidewalks. I want to do something that is a little different, a little creative, that looks nice." |
